    • The POWERbreathe Medic Inspiratory Muscle Trainer is an drug free, evidence based device used in a variety of medical conditions such as COPD, Heart Failure, Asthma, Thoracic Surgery, Ventilator Weaning, Cystic Fibrosis and Neuromuscular Disease.   • Inspiratory Muscle Weakness & IMT

    • Inspiratory Muscle Weakness is inherent in various patient groups. It is most common in COPD, Heart Failure and Neuromuscular disease.  Inspiratory muscle weakness can be attributed to a variety of reasons; mainly with patients who are exercise limited, the inspiratory muscles undergo a de-conditioning effect.  

      Weakness of the inspiratory muscles can result from a number of causes, including disease. In the case of inspiratory muscles, weakness is a major contributor to the perception of dyspnoea.1,2

      The inspiratory muscles exhibit the well documented ‘use it or lose it’ phenomenon and become detrained (atrophy) in the absence of physical activity. This leads to a downward spiral of inactivity and dyspnoea that is observed in many chronic conditions, as well as in the elderly.

      In addition, the use of oral steroid medication (not inhaled steroids) to control lung inflammation in conditions such as asthma and emphysema has been shown to cause weakness of the inspiratory muscles. This weakness can impair lung function and can be counteracted by inspiratory muscle training. (N.B. inhaled steroids do not cause inspiratory muscle weakness.)

      The good news is that the inspiratory muscles can be trained, yielding:
      Improvements in inspiratory muscle strength, power and endurance3,4
      Structural and biomechanical adaptations5,6
      More importantly, inspiratory muscle training (IMT) reduces dyspnoea during exercise and daily activities, as well as improving exercise tolerance and quality of life, particularly in patients with COPD.4,6-12

    • Breathlessness is a common feature of lung and heart disease and can be the biggest limiting factor in a patients life, stopping you from exercising, completing daily tasks or spending time with children or grand children. Research has shown that the strength of the inspiratory muscles (breathing muscles) has a direct influence on how hard we can breathe and how breathless we feel whilst doing it.

      The POWERbreathe Medic applies the tried and trusted principles of resistance (weight) training to the inspiratory muscles, and can be thought of as 'dumbbells for the diaphragm'. When muscles are overloaded regularly for a period of a few weeks, they adapt, becoming stronger and more resistant to fatigue. Activating stronger inspiratory muscles requires less effort during a given task, hence breathlessness / dyspnoea is reduced.

    • POWERbreathe Medic inspiratory muscle training can be either catagorised as low intentisy or high intensity. Low Intensity training takes just 15 minutes on a lower training load, twice daily for the first 12 weeks; thereafter maintenance training is just three times per week7, yielding benefits quickly:

      High Intensity training takes just 5mins and consists of 30 breathes, twice daily at a 50% of your maximum strength of your inspiratory muscles (MIP).

  • IMT Contraindications

      • Inspiratory muscle training is NOT recommended for patients with a history of spontaneous pneumothorax 
      • Inspiratory muscle training is only recommended for patients with a history of traumatic pneumothorax after complete recovery 
      • Inspiratory muscle training is NOT suitable for asthma patients who have low symptom perception and who suffer from frequent severe exacerbations 
      • Inspiratory muscle training is NOT suitable for anyone who has recently experienced a perforated eardrum 
      • Anyone who is under the age of 16 should only use POWERbreathe with supervision from an adult
